S5Ep36: Pawverbs for Kids

Hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk this week with author Jen Bleakley about her new book Pawverbs for Kids.

n the style of Jennifer Bleakley’s bestselling books, Pawverbs: 100 Inspirations to Delight an Animal Lover’s Heart, Pawverbs for a Dog Lover’s Heart, and Pawverbs for a Cat Lover’s Heart, we’re expanding the series to include inspiring devotionals written specifically for children.

Kids love animals! Pawverbs for Kids is jam-packed with 30 true-to-life short stories, or pawverbs. Each of these charming stories features kids and animals―and what a variety of animals there are: dogs, cats, frogs, birds, horses . . . even a bearded dragon and a grasshopper! Each story illustrates a biblical principle or lesson found in the Bible book of Proverbs. This book presents biblical truth in a whimsical way and invites kids to explore deep spiritual truth alongside extremely loveable pets!

Each pawverb includes:

  • A Bible verse from Proverbs
  • A short and engaging story
  • Reflection questions
  • A child-friendly prayer

God has given us animals, ultimately to point us to himself―to the one who is always there and who loves us unconditionally. In this book, children will not only find inspiring and heartwarming animal tales, but spiritual truths to touch their hearts and remind them of God’s unfailing love, wisdom, and grace.

S5Ep35: My Love, God Is Everywhere

This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with authors Victoria Robb Powers and Cameron Mason Vickery about their new book My Love, God Is Everywhere.

Encounter God's unlimited presence and unconditional love in this joyful picture book that helps kids discover God in all parts of creation, from the mountains to the anthills and, most of all, in our hearts amid joy, sadness, calm, and chaos.

In this poetic book for 4- to 8-year-olds, a child asks her mother "Is God here, or is God there?" and begins to understand that God's attention, kindness, and comfort are everywhere. Young children will learn

  • God is present in all parts of nature
  • God is present with them when they are scared or brave, happy or sad, and in all situations
  • each person is loved and good because they are God's child and God is present within them

Written by two ministers and featuring vivid illustrations in rich colors, My Love, God Is Everywhere honors the natural way that children see and love the world while affirming each child's identity as the handiwork of a loving God. Kids and adults alike will enjoy spending time with our good God as they reflect on the truth that God is everywhere.

That’s why this companion guide to the book Screen Kids has been written to connect you to information and encouragement. Technology isn’t going anywhere and your grandkids need you more than ever to guide them in ways that computer's can't.

S5Ep32: Training Young Hearts

This week hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with author Abbey Wedgewood about the latest books in her Training Young Hearts series.

The Training Young Hearts series from Abbey Wedgeworth encourages positive behavior for toddlers by holding out a model for grace based obedience— encouraging kids to run to Jesus with feelings of guilt and shame and to look to the Holy Spirit for help to use their bodies as God intended. The first two titles in this series, What Are Mouths For? and What Are Hands For?, feature dynamic, diverse illustrations and an engaging, exciting lift-the-flap experience.

They are designed not only to be informative and instructive, but to be fun favorites for kids! These books serve as engaging and fun training tools that not only offer examples of how our bodies should and shouldn’t be used, but also offer a framework for introducing the concepts of repentance, reconciliation, forgiveness, and sanctification.

Abbey Wedgeworth is a wife, mother, and writer. The author of Held and the Training Young  Hearts series, she is passionate about discipleship and Bible literacy, and loves to see the way that the gospel transforms how people think and live. Abbey lives on the South Carolina coast with her husband, David, and their three children.

S5Ep31: Hotel Oscar Mike Echo: A Novel

This week co-hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk to author Linda McKillop about her new middle grade novel, Hotel Oscar Mike Echo.

Home isn’t always what we dream it will be.

Eleven-year-old Sierra just wants a normal life. After her military mother returns from the war overseas, the two hop from home to homelessness while Sierra tries to help her mom through the throes of PTSD.

When they end up at a shelter for women and children, Sierra is even more aware of what her life is not. The kind couple who run the shelter, Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin, attempt to show her parental love as she faces the uncertainties of her mom’s emotional health and the challenges of being the brand-new poor kid in middle school. The longer she stays at the shelter, the more Sierra realizes she may have to face an impossible choice as she redefines home.

This middle-grade novel offers a compassionate look at poverty, homelessness, and hope. Readers walk alongside brave Sierra as she holds on to a promise she believes God gave her: that one day she will have a real home. But what if that promise looks far different than she has ever dreamed?

Linda MacKillop writes stories for both adults and kids. She and her husband, Bill, raised four sons in a book- filled home with nightly read-aloud time. Her favorite read-aloud place is a tent, preferably on the water. After living in Virginia for many years, she now resides outside of  Chicago in an empty nest. Linda earned her MFA degree in creative writing from the Rainier Writing Workshop and strives to put life’s broken pieces and
people together again through stories filled with heart and charm. You can learn more about her at lindamackillop.com.

S5Ep30: God's Big Promises Bible Storybook

This week Mike and Sarah talk with author Carl Laferton about his new book, God's Big Promises Bible Storybook.

The book includes 92 foundational Bible stories, faithfully told and beautifully illustrated, which point to the one big story of the Bible―God making and keeping his promises.

Features include:

• 92 faithfully-told stories from the Old & New Testaments

• Simple, memorable language for small children ages 2-6

• 400+ pages filled with vibrant, full-color illustrations

• Bright icons trace 5 themes of God’s promises throughout Scripture

God’s Big Promises Bible Storybook contains both familiar stories, such as Noah & the ark, David & Goliath, and Daniel & the lions’ den, and lesser-known stories such as Jacob & Esau and Simeon & Anna.

Together, these 92 theologically faithful stories point to the one big story of the Bible: God making and keeping his promises to redeem his people.

Bright, colorful icons indicate which stories relate to a promise made or a promise kept within 5 distinct themes:

• Rescue

• People

• Land

• Joy

• King

It is the perfect first Bible to introduce a child to the stories of the Bible and the promise-keeping God who loves them. It also provides a trusted starting point for children to cultivate a lifelong love of God’s word.
