Jesus made a point to include this blessings as part of the Beatitudes. When we make Jesus our Lord and Savior, He washes us clean and places His robes of righteousness and purity upon us. As we walk in Him, we walk in purity. We cannot have a pure heart without Him. Having a pure heart also means keeping our hearts soft and free of bitterness when hard times come. Guarding our thoughts will help to guard our hearts. As we keep our hearts pure, this will be a way that others will see Jesus in us.
When we genuinely experience the mercy of God, we are able to extend that same mercy. Those who are merciful reflect the heart of God to a world lost in darkness. Revenge, hardness of heart and bitterness will lead to death and depression, but mercy leads to more mercy. It's one of the most beautiful gifts that reflects the heart of God.
Elijah was man with a fire and a hunger for the things of God. He could not stand by and watch evil and idolatry become the way of the people of God. To hunger and thirst after righteousness is to hunger and thirst after Jesus and it is the foundation of our walk with Him.
