Episode 262 - Teaching Our Kids A Biblical Worldview with Elizabeth Urbanowicz

“We want all children growing up in Christian homes to be able to think biblically and to faithfully navigate the culture in which they’re living.” Elizabeth Urbanowicz, CEO of Foundation Worldview, helps us as Christian parents to equip our children in the Word of God and to carefully evaluate every idea they encounter. She talks about easy to use tools you can use to do this as a busy mom and how to incorporate them into your child’s day, whether around the dinner table or driving to a soccer game.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Elizabeth Urbanowicz is a follower of Jesus Christ who is passionate about equipping kids to understand the truth of the Christian worldview. She holds a B.S. in Elementary Education and Spanish, an M.S.Ed in Literacy Education, and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Elizabeth began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, she realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. She created curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURES

The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever. Isaiah 40:8 NASB

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Episode 261 - Pouring Out Our Hearts to the King with Susan Shepherd

“We are invited to the throne of grace and mercy where God wants us to pour out our hearts to Him.”  Susan Shepherd, Moms in Prayer USA Country Coordinator, gives us a sneak peek into the new 4-week online Bible study, Petitioning the King. Get new insight into praying for others from examples in the Bible including David in the Psalms, Moses praying for the Israelites, Paul praying for the church, and most importantly, Jesus’ prayers.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Susan Shepherd joyfully serves as the USA Country Coordinator for Moms in Prayer International, coaching, encouraging, and working with amazing godly women across the United States. She joined a Moms in Prayer group in 1996 when her daughters were in elementary school. Since then, she’s experienced the peace, power, and perspective of watching God work in the lives of children and schools and she is passionate about sharing this hope and joy with other moms. Susan is married to Joe, mom to two married daughters, and the grandmother of three with another grandchild on the way. Susan loves to pray, but she also likes coffee with friends, traveling, and a good book.

SCRIPTURES

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 CSB

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NIV

If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me! Psalm 66:18-20 NIV

My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. John 17:15-18 NIV

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11 NIV

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 NIV

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:14,18,21 NIV

Episode 260 - A Passion to Pray for Children & Schools with Fern Nichols

“I was sending my boys to junior high, into a battlefield every single day for their minds. Who’s going to pray?” Fern Nichols, founder of Moms in Prayer International, walks us through the power of praying together including two key purposes of prayer, why we pray, and the crisis we’re in and what to do about it. She also tells us the stories of two of her sons and how God answered prayer for their safety, salvation, and important life decisions.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Fern Nichols is a former elementary school teacher and the founder of Moms in Prayer International, a prayer movement that mobilizes women around the world to gather to pray for their children and schools. In 1984, Fern was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. She knew the school would be a battlefield for their hearts and minds. She realized the warfare would be intense and to fight in this battle she needed to invite other moms to pray. She called a mom and asked her to pray with her for their children and school. Her response was an immediate “yes,” and that was the humble beginning of Moms in Prayer that now spans the USA in every state and is in more than 150 countries.

Moms in Prayer is an hour of hope. Moms are discovering that being a part of the Moms in Prayer community is turning their fears to faith. Week after week they are learning to never underestimate the power of their prayers. Fern has traveled to almost every continent in the world speaking, teaching, and training women how to pray effectively. She and her husband Rle have been married 51 years. They were involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU) for 15 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren.

SCRIPTURES

And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:13 NKJV

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16:24 NIV

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people. 1 Timothy 2:1 NIV

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” Psalm 50:15 NKJV

“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.” Ezekiel 22:30 NIV

When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:13-14 NIV

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.” Acts 12:5,11 NIV

SCRIPTURES

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 KJV

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal. Matthew 6:20 NASB

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18 NIV

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NIV

And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 1:22-23 NIV

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. Colossians 1:9 NIV

If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:15-16 NIV

Teaching Children to Love & Welcome Others with Trillia Newbell

“I want to help parents engage further with their children about what it means to welcome and love the way Jesus does.” Today we hear from Trillia Newbell about her children’s book, The Big Wide Welcome. She brings to our attention the sin of partiality or favoritism and how important it is for us as parents to check our own hearts in order to model this for our children. Kids will learn that Christians and churches are called to be like Jesus, fully welcoming people so they can come to know the Good News.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Trillia Newbell is the author of several books including 52 Weeks in the WordA Great Cloud of WitnessesSacred Endurance, If God Is For Usand the children’s books, The Big Wide WelcomeCreative God, Colorful Us and God’s Very Good Idea. When she isn’t writing, she’s encouraging and supporting other writers as the Acquisitions Director at Moody Publishers. Trillia is married to her best friend, Thern. They reside with their two children near Nashville, TN. You can find her at trillianewbell.com and follow her on Instagram at @trillianewbell.

SCRIPTURES

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14 NIV

My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? James 2:1-4 NLT

Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law. James 2:8-9 NLT

The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:7-10 NIV

SCRIPTURES

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 NIV

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV

Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! Deuteronomy 5:29 NIV

For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 NKJV

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. LORD Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you. Psalm 84:11-12 NIV

“I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love.” John 15:9 MSG

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.  Philippians 2:3-4 ESV

Standing in the Gap by Putting God First with Joy Moreau

“If we put God first, allowing Him to impact our lives, His Word to be our Guide, and His Spirit to abide in us, then we’re going to sow that into our children’s lives and reap what we sow.” We continue our podcast series, Standing in the Gap, focusing on amazing intercessors in the Bible. Stacy welcomes Joy Moreau, former Moms in Prayer Appalachian Division Coordinator, who shares the importance of living a godly life as an example to our children. God knows we get discouraged and anxious at times, so we need to come to Him in prayer, listen, and be aware that He wants to speak to us. Joy gives us examples of how to do this through the minor prophets in the Bible.

ABOUT OUR GUEST
Joy Moreau has the gift of encouragement wrapped in the package of a gentle and quiet spirit. She has been involved in Moms in Prayer for more than 20 years and is the former Moms in Prayer Appalachian Division Coordinator. She leads a Bible study at her home church, University Hills Baptist, in Charlotte. The desire of her heart is for the lives of children to be so impacted for Christ that they follow Him all their days. She and her husband, Joe, reside in North Carolina and have three
grown sons, two daughter in loves, and three grandchildren.

SCRIPTURES

And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:1-3 NIV

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 NIV

Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God, for your sins have brought you down. Bring your confessions, and return to the LORD. Say to him, “Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us, so that we may offer you our praises.” Hosea 14:1-2 NLT

“As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple. Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies. But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the LORD alone.” Jonah 2:7-9 NLT

The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in the sight of your God. Micah 6:8 NIRV

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:31-33 NKJV

Loving Your Prodigal with Mary DeMuth

“I had to learn how to live with joy even when my kids were making difficult decisions that I may not have approved of or liked.” Today Stacy welcomes author and speaker, Mary DeMuth, who shares wisdom and hope for parents of adult children. Loving, praying, and listening is key to navigating this relationship. In prayer, instead of prescribing to God the way we want Him to work in our kids’ lives, we can relinquish control and watch with anticipation and joy how He will creatively give us sign posts along the way.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Mary DeMuth is an international speaker, podcaster, and author of over forty books, fiction and nonfiction, including her latest book, Love, Pray, Listen: Parenting Your Wayward Adult Kids with Joy. Through God’s healing, Mary has overcome a difficult past to become an authentic example of what it means to live a brand-new story. She loves to help others “re-story” their lives through the books she writes. Mary lives in Texas with her husband, Patrick, of 33 years and is mom to three adult children. In her spare (ha!) time, she loves to cook, run, garden, decorate, paint, and do interior design. Connect with Mary at marydemuth.com.

SCRIPTURES

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV

All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NKJV

Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.” Luke 15:13-18 NIV

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’” Luke 15:3-6 NIV

Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 CSB
