Discipling the next generation with Jen Wilkin and J.T. English

August 1, 2023 • 30:09 • Steph Thurling

We are tasked with the amazing and important role of discipling our kids in the Christian faith. In order to do this well we have to understand what we believe and why. We also need to be familiar with Gods Word. My guests today are here to talk about Bible study, theology, and why they are both important in discipling the next generation.

Jen Wilkin is a Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas. An advocate for Bible literacy, she has organized and led studies for women in homes, churches, and parachurch contexts.

J.T. English serves as a pastor, professor, and is an author. J. T. is passionate about seeing God glorified through discipleship in the context of the local church.

Their new, co-authored book, You Are A Theologian, addresses theological questions so that readers understand theology and become contributors to the conversation, and grow in faithfulness to the Great Commissions call to make disciples.

J.T. and Jen help us understand the difference between Bible study and theology, how they work together, and why both are important. We also cover a lot of things about discipling the next generation. Jen and JT are in different seasons of parenting kids so their shared perspective and wisdom is encouraging and practical no matter what age your kids are.

Making room for what matters with Kari Kampakis

In a world that constantly pushes us to hustle harder and do more, this weeks conversation is a breath of fresh air. I sat down with the wise and grace-filled Kari Kampakis, and she reminded us of something so important: sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is make peace with accomplishing less in a day.

As parents, it's easy to feel like we need to keep up with everything: our careers, commitments, expectations, and a perfectly run household. But what if slowing down is actually the bravest and most obedient thing we can do? Kari gives us permission to step back, breathe, and create space for the things that really matter.

Here are four takeaways from our conversation:

  • How doing less can actually strengthen your parenting and your peace
  • Why margin in your schedule creates more room for spiritual growth
  • Ways to listen to God's leading in the pace of your family life
  • The freedom that comes when you stop chasing shoulds and start embracing enough

Kari Kampakis is a mom of four daughters, a bestselling author, speaker, and host of The Girl Mom Podcast. Her books, including Love Her Well and More Than a Mom, have encouraged countless women to parent with purpose, grace, and deep faith. Karis message is always full of wisdom and grounded in truth and this conversation is no different.

I hope this episode helps you take a deep breath and remember: you dont have to do it all to be a faithful parent.
