Life with Autism: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

June 7, 2024 • 24:42 • Greg and Jessica Hurlbut

Life with autism can sometimes feel like a roller coaster ride. The ups and down, twists and turns can often make our heads spin and our hearts sick.

In Episode 80, Jessica shares openly about this past week and our struggles with our daughter Mara. Reflecting on a week full of highs and lows, we are reminded how quickly a good day can transition into a bad one. Jessica encourage listeners to remember that life is a paradox: its beautiful and terrible all at the same time, but God promises to walk with us through our valleys.

When they Wander: Understanding Autism and Elopement

The scariest day of my life was the afternoon my five-year-old daughter on the spectrum went missing. The police were notified, we gathered a search party to scour the area, and an hour later we found her in a neighbors home, rummaging through their cupboards and playing with their poodle. I wouldnt wish the fear that overtook me in that hour on my worst enemy. Yet, nearly half of children on the autism spectrum attempt to elopemaking wandering one of the top safety concerns for autism parents

In this episode, we share our own personal stories, discuss reasons why children on the spectrum elope, and offer practical strategies to keep them safe. If you or a loved one is a parent of a child on the spectrum, you wont want to miss this episode.

BONUS: Praying for your kids this school year

Hey friends, today weve got something special for you: a bonus episode straight from the Pardon the Mess podcast!

Every Monday, host Courtney DeFeo shares a short prayer to help you lift up your kids. This years series follows Christian Parentings brand new prayer journal, A Great Cloud of Witnesses

Each week highlights a biblical hero of the faith, paired with Scripture-based prayers for your kids. Here is a sneak peek into week one:

This first week is all about Noaha man of incredible faith and obedience. While the world around him turned away from God, Noah walked in righteousness. Building the ark probably looked foolish to everyone else, but Noah trusted Gods word even when it didnt make sense. Thats the kind of faith we want for our kids: to listen to Gods voice over any others and walk confidently with Him even when it means standing apart.

If you love this episode and dont have your copy of A Great Cloud of Witnesses yet, its not too late to get yours! Go ChristianParenting.org to get your copy and follow along. And dont forget to tune in to Pardon the Mess every Monday for more prayer episodes.

About the Host

Greg and Jessica Hurlbut

Greg and Jessica Hurlbut are pastors in Upstate NY and parents of five kiddos; two whom struggle with severe autism, two adopted through foster care, and one typical teenage boy.

Greg and Jessica are huge adoption advocates. After adopting a sibling group of two from foster care in 2014, Jessica attempted to run 110 miles as a visual representation of the 110,000 kids currently in foster care who were freed to be adopted and in desperate need of a forever family.  This feat sparked an annual National Adoption Day Run where over 100 virtual and in-person runners gather to complete a 125-mile relay across St Lawrence County in 24 hours.

When facing the grim diagnosis of autism, they searched far and wide for Christian resources to help them walk this difficult road and found none. Through the Full Spectrum Parent Podcast, Greg and Jessica desire to be the person they needed. Each episode offers practical advice and hope to special needs parents—reminding them God is with them, for them, and will use all they have endured for his glory.
