Episode 216: Leaders Accept Their Limits with Sara Hagerty

So many messages, particularly those heard in leadership circles, urge us to move past our limits. No pain no gain. This message is loud and clear at the gym, and some of us even hear it at church. Sometimes it’s subtle. Sometimes it’s in your face. “See what you're made of!”

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good challenge, but we also believe many of us have a false view of our actual capacities. The pace of our lives says something. At times we might find ourselves feeling like it’s all too much. Too much laundry and too many bills. Too many appointments, meetings, and responsibilities. Too many open tabs on our browser. We go to bed exhausted, too tired to enjoy a few minutes with our own thoughts.

What if learning to accept our human limits allows us to fully reach our potential? In our work, especially with our Wholehearted Leadership Cohorts, we often say, “Wholehearted leaders learn to love their limits.” We explore this idea of limits, accepting our circumstances and fences that appear in our lives, with our guest, Sara Hagerty. As a driver and leader herself, she has experienced infertility, illness, loss and much more.

Sara Hagerty is a bestselling author and Jesus follower. She is the wife and mother of seven – four adopted from Africa and three through miracle pregnancies. Her first book, Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet (2014), ponders the conflict inherent when life’s expectations do not meet up with reality. Her latest book, The Gift of Limitations: Finding Beauty in Your Boundaries (March 2024), illustrates how our greatest weaknesses are the doorway to rich intimacy with God. Sara and her family live in Missouri.
