When I came to faith in Jesus
I grew up in church and thought knowing about God was the same thing as knowing God. It isn’t.
I took the classes our church offered. I was baptized and got my certificate. But, I don’t know if I was saved back then. I hadn’t asked Jesus—really asked him—to be my Lord and Savior. Then, I ran over a Bible tract with my bicycle.
I was about ten years old, flying through the park on my new green Schwinn, when I glanced down and saw it. The cover was gone, but the first page said something like, “Do you want to be sure you are going to heaven?”
I looked around and didn’t see anyone, but I rode around the park several times. Every time I rode back to that spot, the little book was still lying on the ground. Finally, I was sure that whoever had dropped it wasn’t coming back, so I put it in my pocket and brought it home.
I wanted to be sure I was going to heaven. So, I read the whole book. When I got to the salvation prayer on the last page, I memorized it. I didn’t think prayers worked unless my eyes were closed! To be honest, I had to stop a couple of times in the middle of that prayer to peek. I wanted to make sure I got all the words right.
That day, my ten-year-old self told Jesus that I wanted him to be my Lord as well as my Savior.
I don’t know if I was saved that day. I believed what the classes had taught me and wanted to do the right things. But, that day, kneeling beside my twin bed with the burnt orange bedspread, I became certain of my salvation. I knew Jesus was my Lord and that I was going to heaven.

A few months ago, I was given the opportunity to pay it forward.
I have worked with the Pocket Testament League to create a copy of the gospel of John, which is prefaced by a Q-and-A section I wrote. I had one goal: to make sure that if a child picked up this book, he or she would know for certain what it means to give their life to Christ and know they will go to heaven.
Jesus: Got Questions? uses age-appropriate language for third graders and older. I answered many of the questions we all have about the Bible, God, Jesus, and salvation. I’ve been teaching the Bible for more than thirty years, and those questions are evergreen regardless of age. It was fun to write the questions and answers with kids in mind.

Our prayer is that children everywhere will have the same experience with Christ that I had after reading that Bible tract. It is amazing to think that most people make the most important decision of their lives as children.
The statistics are both exciting and sobering. The chances a person will maintain their relationship with God are greatly increased if he or she meets God at a young age.
Solomon wrote, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). A proverb isn’t a promise, but it does reveal what is always going to be the most common truth. I imagine most of you reading these words were “trained up” in the Christian faith.
If I’d never met Jesus
I wonder sometimes what would have happened in my life if I had not found that Bible tract.
I remember getting scared as a young child and praying for Jesus to keep me safe. I remember my dad getting really ill and spending a lot of time in the hospital. It helped to know that Jesus was there with him.
I was a sophomore in high school when Dad came home saying he was going to accept a job in a different city. My friends were buying their class rings while I was packing up my bedroom.
My youth pastor presented me with a going-away gift: a copy of The Living Bible that the members of the youth group had signed. He suggested I start by reading the book of John. So, while our furniture was being loaded into the van, I sat on the curb and read the gospel of John.
I remember realizing that Jesus was going to take care of me at my new school too. He did. We moved into our new home. A couple of days later, I met my next-door neighbor.
It just so happened he was the high school quarterback.
