Episode 193: Rekindling Your Marriage When You Feel Like Roommates with Dr. Smalley

It’s not news to say that marriages are struggling. Statistics show that 50% of first marriages will end in divorce (in and outside the church) and second marriages have an even greater chance of ending in divorce. With twenty years as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I’ve worked with couples in just about every stage of marriage and have found some key factors in whether marriages make it or not. So today we’re going to talk about hope and help for marriages with our guest, Dr. Greg Smalley.

Dr. Smalley serves as the vice president of Marriage and Family Formation at Focus on the Family.  In this role, he develops and oversees initiatives that prepare individuals for marriage, strengthen and nurture existing marriages, and help couples in marital crisis. Prior to joining Focus on the Family, Smalley worked for the Center for Relationship Enrichment at John Brown University and served as president of the National Institute of Marriage. He is the author of 17 books including, “Fight Your Way to a Better Marriage”, “The DNA of Parent and Teen Relationships”, and “The Whole-Hearted Marriage”. He and his wife, Erin, co-created “Ready to Wed”, a complete premarital curriculum for engaged couples, and the online Focus on Marriage Assessment. They also released “Crazy Little Thing Called Marriage: 12 Secrets to a Lifelong Romance” in 2016. Married since 1992, Greg and Erin live in Colorado with their three daughters, Taylor, Murphy and Annie, and their son, Garrison. Dr. Smalley brings at least one child to every age-appropriate event, exposing them to the crucial role marriage plays in the family and society.

Episode 192: Motherhood - Remaining You While Raising Them with Alli Worthington

Motherhood. It’s a loaded word with a vast array of connotations. Some good. Some not so good. Men listening will gain some beautiful insights about the women they walk alongside. Women, whether you want to be a mom, have already launched your kids, or are in the middle of the journey, this episode is for you. Our guest today is going to not only bless your socks off with practical wisdom, hope and grace for today, but she’s a trusted voice for the modern woman and we hope you lean in close.  You’ll get a preview of her new book, Remaining You While Raising Them, as you listen to Alli Worthington explain that modern motherhood is broken and the reality for many moms is that they are hitting the "Mother Load", living on the verge of burnout. This is not a typical parenting conversation, and this is not a typical parenting book,, but a resource for moms who are ready to grow in their own ability to emotionally regulate, and ready to learn who they are and what they need. Don't wait until after your kids are launched to show them what healthy mothering looks like. And...know that you won't feel more mom guilt after listening today. In fact, you might feel a little lighter.

Alli Worthington, known for her straight-talking encouragement and practical tools that help women reach their dreams in business and life, is the author of five books including The Year of Living Happy, Fierce Faith, Breaking Busy, and her latest, Remaining You While Raising Them. She is a speaker, podcaster, and life and business coach who launched Called Creatives, a cohort of women speakers and writers. Episode 191: What You NEED to Know About Internet Safety for Your Kids with BJ Park

Are you concerned about internet safety for your kids? Where are kids vulnerable today? Is TikTok safe or not? What makes a kid more vulnerable to an online predator? This episode is vital to every parent and any adult working with children today. However, know that this topic might be triggering. We do hope you will share this information, or even this whole podcast with your kids, but make sure you listen first and decide what is appropriate for the age and stage of your children.

Our guest, BJ Park is a prosecuting attorney for the state of Oregon for crimes committed against children. He has worked with the FBI, Homeland Security, and city, county and state police from Chicago to Portland, Oregon. With twenty years of experience, he has developed internet safety presentations to help educate kids, parents, and anybody who works with children on the topic of internet safety. There are so many things loving parents don't know about technology and the ways it is used to harm children. BJ is married with two children of his own and cares deeply about helping children be smart when it comes to their gaming, phones, and social media. This is a must-listen and with such an important topic, we extended our time a bit. From questions like, "What do predators know that parents don't know?" to "Is Tick Tock okay for our kids - why or why not?" and "What is the one thing every parent NEEDS to know before they hand their child a smartphone?", BJ answers with so much wisdom and truth. Share this with others!

Episode 190: Blindspots: Learning to be a non-anxious presence, listen well and handle interruptions with Jeff & Terra Mattson

Blind spots. We all have them, but none of us want to face the reality of what we are missing unless we are ready to grow and become more wholehearted leaders at home, at work and in the community. Join Jeff and Terra Mattson, co-founders of LIving Wholehearted, authors of Shrinking the Integrity Gap, executive coaches, and co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast as they talk about the reasons we all need to ask all those in our sphere of influence (especially our spouse and children), "How am I impacting you?".  And then we need to listen. Jeff and Terra give practical steps to become an effective listener - helping those you serve feel known, seen, heard, and cared for AND giving you the keys to become a more healthy and effective leader. No one likes to have something stuck in their teeth all day without a single person pointing it out. Similarly, learning to receive feedback from those we say we love the most is one of the greatest wholehearted leadership practices we can return to over and over. Tune in and enjoy this candid, practical, and inside track to becoming the leader you would follow at home, at work and in the community.

Episode 189: Raising Prayerful Kids with Steph Thurling

Parents ask how much is too much? How do I balance all the things? Should we do club sports or music lessons? Should I homeschool or send my kids to public school? How do I make sure my kids don't lose their faith after they leave? Help! If you are a parent (or would like to be someday), this conversation is for you. Leading in the home is one of the greatest responsibilities we have - shepherding the life of a child. Steph has a master’s degree in youth, family, and culture from Fuller Theological Seminary and has a background in youth and children’s ministry. She is co-author of Raising Prayerful Kids, and a frequent speaker at churches and mom groups. Steph lives in Minnesota with her husband and three kids. In this episode Steph shares insights about how to balance it all, the main things we can focus on as parents, and how to teach our kids to pray. Whether you are a committed follower of Jesus or on a spiritual journey and curious about how to parent well, listen in. We are so glad you're here!

Episode 187: Shrinking the Gap: Concentric Circles and How To Actually Live From our Priorities with Jeff and Terra Mattson

There is so much to do. Our kids need to be fed and driven to their activities. Bills need to be paid. Church is asking for volunteers. Friends and family want our time. Bible study. Work deadlines. There are expectations and demands everywhere we look no matter what stage of life we find ourselves in. As leaders in the home, at work, and in the community, we are modeling to everyone in our wake what is most important to us by the way we spend our time. We are also modeling boundaries (or lack of boundaries). The Mattsons share about the Concentric Circles tool found in their book, Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live, and how they have learned to live out their priorities. Whether it's finding time with God or tending to their own soul care, their marriage, or their kids - in the midst of running two organizations it isn't easy. Want to be a parent who matches your walk with your talk? Want to model to your staff how to live from the values you espouse? Want to have more time for the people, and the things, you say you love the most? This episode is for you.

Jeff Mattson (MA ORGL) and Terra Mattson (MA LPC, LMFT) are the husband and wife team who founded Living Wholehearted and Courageous Girls. Living Wholehearted is a professional counseling and organizational leadership development firm outside Portland, Oregon, and Courageous Girls is a global movement and curriculum helping moms walk with their daughters at every stage of their growing years. Terra is an Executive Coach, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, speaker, and author of Courageous: Being Daughters Rooted in Grace (David C. Cook, 2020). Jeff is a former pastor, Executive Coach, organizational development consultant, and speaker. Together they co-authored Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live (David C. Cook, 2020). They are the co-hosts of the Living Wholehearted Podcast and the Dear Mattsons parenting advice series found on YouTube. Terra is the creator of the Helping Moms Raise Confident Daughters guides found at cpguides.org.

Episode 185: Blended Families - the rebirth after death of a spouse or divorce with Bo Stern and Cliff Brady

Going through the loss of a marriage after the death of a spouse or divorce is very difficult. And then trying to blend a family and create something new adds a whole other layer. The average blended family takes at least 7 years to blend, so today - if you hear anything, we hope you hear grace for the journey as we talk with a couple who truly gets this assignment. We have Cliff Brady and Bo Stern today. You might have heard Bo share last month about suffering well. Bo is the author of Beautiful Battlefields, When Holidays Hurt, and Ruthless. She has been a pastor for a few decades and speaks nationally. Cliff is a business consultant with a variety of expertises. Together, they have 10 children and 6 grandchildren! And yes, their last name is Brady. Bo and Cliff share candidly about their caution to remarriage, how they transitioned toward dating, and the conversations they had with each of their 10 children. They share their observations on how they see divorcees treated differently in the church than widows. They believe people shouldn’t need to earn the compassion of others - single parenting is hard! As you tune in, you'll gain some beautiful insights into how to keep your marriage first in the midst of lots of children, and the core values Bo and Cliff believe are helping them have a healthy blended family (despite the many hurts they all experienced along the way). Whether you are grieving the loss of a spouse (through death or divorce), considering remarriage, or currently blending a family, this episode is for you. And honestly, if you are leading blended families or wanting to better understand the needs of your friends, this episode is for you too!
